Oak Hill Farm is a 700-acre property in the Valley of the Moon in Sonoma County, an hour north of San Francisco. Oak Hill uses organic methods since owned by the family in the 1950s, chemicals have not been used on the property. The farm is owned by Anne Teller. Depending on the season, 10-20 people work on the farm growing an amazing diversity of vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit year round.
Oak Hill’s system includes; growing and marketing over 200 crops; providing year-round employment for farm labor; using cover crops, compost teas and conscientious land use to improve the soils; providing habitat areas for beneficial insects and wildlife. This set of strategies allows the farm to integrate farm production with longer-term environmental goals.
Oak Hill grows flowers, sold fresh in our Red Barn Store on the farm, at the farmers’ markets in Sonoma and at Sonoma Market. Some of the flowers are dried and will make their way into wreaths, creating work during inclement weather. Harvest begins with perennials, some of the oldest plantings on the property, with flowering peaches, quince and forsythia. Annuals are planted and harvested in the spring through late fall. The flower fields are visible from the driveway into the Red Barn Store, just one reason many customers visit weekly.
We grow a full array of vegetables from asparagus to zucchini. Our salad mix is famous in the valley and changes with the season to include at one time or another, asian greens, mache, arugula, cresses, mustards and a dizzying variety of lettuce. Produce is available in the Red Barn Store, at the Sonoma Farmers’ Markets and at many restaurants in the Valley of the Moon and several in San Francisco.
The farm also has several small orchards and the Red Barn Store customers are the lucky recipients of their bounty. Apples like Arkansas Black, Gravenstein and Pippin; Bosc, Comise and Seckel pears; peaches, plums and figs all find their way into the barn. There is also a large planting of raspberries.
Although Oak Hill Farm is not open to the public, tours of the farm are given monthly, the first Saturday of the month. Call for more information. The store on the property is open from April until just before Christmas, Wednesday through Sunday, 10-6.
